Opening of the Med Campus Graz
On Friday, October 13th 2017, the opening of the new Med Campus in Graz, Main Construction Unit Module 1 was celebrated.
With construction costs of around EUR 100 M, this show case project, the new Medical University of Graz, is, after four years of construction, going into operation as planned.
Module 1 was built on an approx. 2.7 hectare building site in Graz Stiftingtal and occupies around 45,000 m² gross floor area. In the lower levels, there is an underground car park for approx. 115 cars with the ground and first floors being specifically for teaching. The five lecture theatres offer space for an audience of 350-500 people. In addition, there are enough practice rooms to accommodate 2,000 students.
In the upper levels there are the campus levels. Here are six, separately constructed construction blocks for each individual institute which are joined together through a bridge. Approximately 700 employees of the Medical University are stationed here.
The new Medical University of Graz was built according to the sustainability criteria as outlined by the ÖGNI (Austrian Sustainable Building Council) and achieved Platinum Status Certification. This is the highest award according to the ÖGNI criteria. Austria-wide, this award is unique for the construction of a laboratory building.
Thomas Lorenz ZT GmbH was responsible, together with Vamed, for the onsite construction management and static assessment.
