Not only the building itself grows, the trees are too. Since this week, the new inner city IKEA at Vienna's Westbahnhof has been “greened”. A total of around 160 plant troughs will be installed on the facade and on the roof.

The total weight of a trough varies between 2,000 kg and 9,000 kg depending on its size. The troughs have a diameter of 120 cm to 210 cm and are made of steel. In addition to a climatic effect – studies have shown that the environment can cool down by up to 1.5 ° C on hot days – certification according to “BREEAM”, an evaluation system for ecological and socio-cultural aspects of the sustainability of buildings, is sought. It won’t be long until you can experience it all live – the opening is planned for autumn 2021.
